you know, if you want to do window placement yourself , you actually
don't NEED a window manager.  If you did absolutely everything *inside*
of emacs (as I've known people to do) you can run just one or two apps and
don't bother with a window manager at all!  If all you want is a ticker,
write a plain text app and use "rxvt -e script" with the appropriate
-geometry setting to put it underneath whatever other windows you have.

This also means that you don't need a mouse.

But if you're going to bother to do all that, maybe you don't need X,
but graphics (browsers) are certainly nice to have.
