actually, if you watch the video casts of astronauts doing work on the
shuttle, they're mostly just remote hands for the people on the ground.
You'll hear ground control talking them through a set of instructions like
"Turn knob A to 5, flip switch B to off, etc..."

They operate more like a set of extra eyes watching over your shoulder,
keeping track of your to-do list and reading it off to you so you don't
have to context switch to read off your display.
